Peritip – Mike Stevens
Peritip

Story

Collaborating with Suzanne Roelofs, a holistic dentist and gum disease specialist to create Peritip. A dental tool designed to improve personal gum care, treating and preventing periodontal gum disease. Together, we’ve designed, prototyped and manufactured the Peritip, created the identity. Now developing the printed and online experience, to help eductate people of the importance of gum health and how to use their Peritip.

Review:

I’ve worked with Mike on Peritip from the beginning. His drive has got the project from a standstill to up and running. As a dentist designing a product was new to me, but Mike took on the project with energy and commitment. Without him, Peritip wouldn’t have come to fruition. He designed the product, produced all the graphics, animations, packaging and website. Going beyond by assisting in getting the product on the market. He’s dedicated, reliable and funny, a joy to work with.

My Thoughts:

Peritip has been a great challenge as I’ve been able to use my entire skill set. As a designer, it’s always great to see your work out there and being used, but it goes up a visceral level as a product designer. Hearing people’s feedback on how good it feels in hand and that it’s genuinely helped people is a feeling I will never forget.

Project Summary

Problem

What’s Periodontal disease and how do you treat it?

Gum diseases are some of the most common in Europe, but among the least acknowledged, they can increase the risk of diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

Periodontal gum disease (periodontitis) is an infection of tissues that hold teeth in place, leading to teeth loosening or tooth loss.

Out of reach of personal hygiene practices, harmful bacteria can develop in the periodontal pocket between teeth and gums. Clearing the bacteria stops the infection from spreading to the root, tooth, gum or bone.

Solution

Peritip

Comfortable & manoeuvrable

Focussed on ergonomics, it fits comfortably in the hand. It is easy to manoeuvre, even in difficult-to-reach areas of the mouth.

Kind on gums

The birch tips are soft and continue to fluff up when they absorb water, making a natural brush that doesn’t splinter.

Gum-friendly, planet-friendly

The tool aims for a big impact inside the mouth and a small one outside, with 100% recyclable plastic and compostable tips.

Identity

Simple product, simple identity.

Designing the identity to communicate Peritip, created by an expert to successfully clean gums. Using simple, clean graphics, colours and type to express the importance of clean gums and a good dental hygiene routine.

Experience

Interactive instructions

Creating a one-handed instruction interface to help
people learn how to set up, use and clean their Peritip.
